An Information-Communication System for Early Warning and Collision Avoidance in Road Traffic

Józef Pawelec

Abstract

The presented system takes the advantage of information-communication technology, ICT and introduces wireless networks’ methodology into vehicles and road infrastructure for a significant enhancement of road traffic safety. Warning signals are transmitted to the back of column of vehicles and it enables the distant drivers to stop in time or to make such operation automatically. Largescale simulations for different traffic conditions have been carried out. They show that in a pile-up scenario the number of collisions decreases from nearly 100% to zero as the penetration of new system (i-radar) increases from 0 to 100%. Even at 50% penetration almost all heavy collisions are excluded and the other collisions reduced twice.
